Youthcom believes:
That young people have a unique role to play in the life of the wider community, and in particular, the building of a just and peaceful society;
That young people have a right to be listened to and heard at all levels of our community and that their rights and responsibilities should be protected by society;
That in working with other Churches we give witness to the crucial role of Churches in developing and celebrating a more tolerant and diverse society; and
That it is right as well as beneficial for groups working for, and with, young people to work in partnership and co-operation.
Youthcom will work in partnership with key voluntary, statutory and Church based groups to enhance whole community awareness and empowerment of the unique gifts of all young people by:
- Advocating and seeking protection of the rights of all young people in the wider community;
- Seeking to influence central and local government policy, decision making and legislation as they impinge on issues affecting young people, particularly young people at risk and/or those from multi-disadvantaged communities;
- Developing and enhancing partnerships with key voluntary, statutory and Church based organisations in order to best effect the above;
- Proactive involvement in initiatives within the wider youth service;
- Enabling young people to acknowledge that rights and duties are interrelated and encouraging them to undertake positive roles/duties in the wider community; and
- Encouraging and supporting young people in the diocese to develop meaningful relationships with young people from other traditions and cultural backgrounds.
